Celebrate the Chapel Hill community! The Tar Heel 10 Miler is designed to celebrate and showcase downtown Chapel Hill, the UNC campus, and the surrounding communities. This event benefits the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA’s Annual Campaign. Endurance Magazine, together with the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership and Fleet Feet Sports are proud to bring you this landmark running event.

**Promo code discounts do not apply. The shadow runner category is for people that are unable to join us on race day, but still want to run the 10 mile distance in their own local area. It is based on an honor system. We mail shadow runners a finisher medal and a shirt the week after the race. We do not allow transfers into the Shadow Runner category if you are already registered.
Inaugural Double Down 14-Mile Challenge
Do you have it in you? Start the 4-mile at 7:15am and get back across the finish line in time to cross the start line for the 10-mile no later than 7:55am. When you cross the finish line you get 3 medals – a 4-mile, 10-mile, and the Double Down medal – and an awesome Double Down tee. The Double Down Challenge is limited to 500 pre-registered runners! Online registration closes on Thursday, April 20 at 11:59 PM. In-person will be available only at the EXPO on Friday, but NOT on race day.
For safety purposes and logistics management, baby strollers and dogs are NOT allowed on the course. No exceptions will be made.
Updating or Adding Group Affiliation OR Corporate Challenge Company Affiliation
You can update or add your group affiliation for your existing Tar Heel 10 Miler registration by logging onto http://myevents.active.com, where you will find your registration and can make updates.
In Person Registration & Changing Races
In person registration will be available. Participants may change races, but you must do so at the pre-race Expo/Packet Pick-Up on Friday, April 20th. You will be asked to pay the difference with cash or check if upgrading to a longer or timed race. Refunds will not be provided if you are downgrading. Sorry, we do not allow transfers to the Shadow Runner category.
Please do not change races without letting us know!
Entry fees are non-refundable.
We appreciate you, as our customer, and understand that sometimes you just can’t make the race. We have created a great policy that offers you several different options, in the event you cannot attend on race day. You may choose only one of the options below:
Defer Your Entry: You may defer your entry to another date or event within our event portfolio. Deferrals are allowed and must be processed by the Event registration manager. An administration fee of $25 will be charged in the event you defer. Deferrals expire after 12 months. Athlete may request a deferral by submitting an email request prior to March 23, 2018.
Purchase Booking Protect: Booking Protect offers through the ACTIVE Network, race registration protection to runners so that they can get their entry fees back if they can’t participate in running events for covered reasons. The product, called Registration Protection is located in the registration path on Active. All refunds and claims will go through Booking Protect.
Transfers: You may not give or sell your number to anyone else. Bib transfers are allowed for an administration charge of $25 and must be processed through the ACTIVE Network registration portal no later than April 6, 2018.

Race Day Information
Start Line Location: Stadium Drive & South Rd in front of the Bell Tower
Finish Line Location: Stadium Drive near Gate 2
4 Mile Run: 7:15 AM
10 Miler: 7:45 AM
All 4 Mile runners are asked to begin lining up behind the start line between 6:45-7:05 AM. Look for pace signage indicating your predicted pace and line up accordingly. Important pre-race announcements will be made 10 minutes before the start of each race.
Official Pace Team – Sponsored by Balanced Movement & ATI PT
If you’ve got a specific goal race pace in mind for the 10 miler, be sure to follow the red shirts of the Official Pace Team runners. There will be groups running at 30 second intervals from a 6:30 to 10:30 per mile pace. No pre-race sign-up required.
Bathrooms inside Stadium:
Runners will have access to ALL bathrooms inside Kenan Stadium on race morning. There will not be portojons available at the start line since Kenan Stadium is right next to the start line.
There will be a bag check available on race morning. It will be located in section 112 near Gate 3 of the Stadium (by the Bell Tower). Please provide your own bag and do NOT give us your valuables. We will not be responsible for lost items.
Races are held, rain or shine, unless Endurance Magazine determines that conditions are too dangerous. This will be based on a prudent decision made on race weekend or race day by Endurance Magazine and local law enforcement officials. If the race is canceled due to inclement weather there will be neither refunds nor transfers. This position is consistent with USA Track & Field recommendations and with the protocol of sharing the risks associated with the sport of running. In the event of inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances, Endurance Magazine reserves the right to alter, cancel or eliminate any/all portions of the race.
No baby strollers or dogs allowed on the course. Littering on the course will result in disqualification.

Laurel Hill Challenge Awards (for 10 Miler)
Top 5 male & female. All runners will receive a split for the Laurel Hill portion of the race course.
All runners will be provided with race bibs with timing chips attached to the back. It is very important that the race number be worn on the front of your shirt to ensure that it works properly. In accordance with USATF Rules, overall and cash awards will be determined by gun time while age group awards will be determined by your chip time.
We do NOT ship unclaimed awards, but they can be picked up at the Endurance Magazine studio (1114 Environ Way, Chapel Hill) beginning the first Tuesday following the event date from 9:30am-4pm until April 28th.
NOTE: Endurance Magazine reserves the right to add/delete categories and awards prior to race based on participation.
Minimum Pace Requirement
Participants in both the 10 miler and the 4 mile (Double Down Challenge included) run must maintain a minimum pace of 15:00/mile to participate in this event. This rule is in place to enable police to reopen the major roads used for race course. Race officials will be following the back of the pack to enforce this rule. In the event that you are unable to maintain the minimum pace, you will asked to use sidewalks and either complete the remainder of the course unassisted by police, or use the cue sheet provided by race officials that details the shortest walk back to the race site. If you have questions about this rule, please see a race official at the expo. Thank you for your understanding.
Double Down Challenge Details
7:15AM Start Time
The 4 mile and the Double Down Challenge start at 7:15am. If you are concerned about beating the clock, make your way to the front of the pack and run strong. You may not start the 4 mile run early in order to accomplish the challenge.
Here’s the FUN part! YOU MUST complete the 4 mile run BEFORE the start line of the 10 miler closes PROMPTLY at 7:55 am.
We will have a crew member running as our Official Double Down Pacer wearing a DOUBLE DOWN PACER: STAY IN FRONT OF ME sign on the back of her shirt. In order to succeed you must stay in front of her. She will enter the Double Down Express Lane in time for you to start the 10 miler race before it closes PROMPTLY at 7:55am.
Double Down Express Lane
After crossing the 4 mile finish line, move quickly through the left side of the chute through the Double Down Express Lane.
You will not pickup your medal, food, or drinks. There is an aid station at mile 1.5 of the 10mile course where you can get water or sports drink.
Upon reaching the end of the chute, join the rest of the 10 miler runners a the start line… if the race has already started – just keep running! You have until 7:55 am to cross the start line.
350M From the Finish Line to the Start Line
The 4 mile finish line is exactly 350meters from the start line and there will be people around whom you must maneuver to get to the start line. You must cross the finish line in time to walk/jog the 350m to the start line before it closes at 7:55 am.
7:45AM 10 Mile Start Time
The 10 mile run starts at 7:45am. If you make it back from the 4 mile run before the 10 mile starts, you have more time to rest and catch your breath. Make your way into the start line crowd and hang out.
7:55AM Start Line Closes
The start line closes at 7:55am SHARP and the timing mats will be removed. No exceptions will be made to this cut-off time. This is part of the challenge… some will make it and some will not. We are proud of everyone who attempts this challenge!
10 Miler Minimum 15 min/mile Pace
Once you get on the 10 mile course you must maintain a 15-minute/mile pace to remain an active runner. If you start going slower than that pace you will be asked to move to the sidewalk so that the roads can begin opening.
Double Down Medal & Shirt Pickup
Cross the finish line for the second time and celebrate! YOU DID IT! Grab some food, grab a water bottle and head over to our Double Down Awards Tent to pickup your Double Down medal and shirt!

USA Track & Field North Carolina
2017 Long Distance Running 10 Mile State Championships
Thanks to USA Track & Field North Carolina, the Tar Heel 10 Miler will once again serve as the official host of the 10 mile state championships!
- Prize Money ($2000 total)
- Open Men & Women: 1st $400, 2nd $200, 3rd $100.
- Masters Men & Women: 1st $150, 2nd $100, 3rd $50
Individual Competition Eligibility & Series Awards:
To be eligible for any placing in Open, Masters or Team categories at the USATF North Carolina Championship, you must be a full time 12 month resident of NC and a member of the USATF North Carolina Association. The top 10 runners in each Male, Female and Masters Divisions will be receiving All State Plaques at the end of the year.
Team Competition Eligibility & Series Awards:
USATF North Carolina is featuring a year-long team competition. USATF will be providing nice team trophies engraved with the winning male and female teams that will be rotated around the state each year. In order to compete, the team has to be a registered USATF NC club. Each race will need a minimum of 3 scoring members and will be calculated using cross country scoring. USATF will be calculating all Team Scoring. Altra Footwear and Feetures! are sponsoring the team competition. Each race the winning team will have a prize bag provided by the sponsors.
